Abstract

Household energy choices play a crucial role in shaping energy
consumption patterns. This review synthesizes existing literature to
identify the determinants of household energy choices. A comprehensive
search of peer-reviewed articles yielded twenty-six (26) studies, which
were analysed using thematic framework. The review revealed that
households’ energy choices are influenced by factors such as socio-
demographic characteristics (Education, household size, housing type,
technological advancement, cultural preferences) and not just income.
Based on the outcomes of the review, it is recommended that Government
should implement targeted subsidies for low-income households to
promote the adoption of modern energy use and invest in energy
infrastructure development, especially in rural areas.
